This will a five day workshop introducing students to various methods of creating, recording and treating sound based on a historical evolution of the medium. This will focus on several of sounds applications through, among other things, politics and popular culture. Participants will learn how to make cheap alternatives to work with sound in both a scientific and musical manner. These activities include the construction of various microphones and use of found object to create sound as well as more general field recording. We will also look at different software on the market and how recordings can be structurally arranged to form composition in both live and prepared applications. The emphasis in this process will be on poetics, using technique as a base. Through the activities each participant should be able to find room for their own expression and path of further learning.
