Meiyu Tao - Grapple Isaac Newton
Description:
When Newton saw an apple fall, he found
in that slight startle from his contemplation -
'tis said (for I'll not answer above ground
for any sage's creed or calculation) -
a mode of proving that the earth turn'd round
in a most natural whirl, called “gravitation”;
and this is the sole mortal who could grapple,
since Adam, with a fall or with an apple.
(Don Juan 1821)
How does it work?
1) The apple rolls from the transparent tube of the apple tree exerting a
centrifugal force.
2) Due to the gravity, the apple falls from the tree.
3) By the lever, the apple lifts up another apple and moves it into the
tube.
4) The apple touches the foot and starts the machine. The foot lifts up the
apple to Newton's hand.
5) Newton eats the apple, bends over his head and the apple drops from
his head into the tube.
Location:
This installation will be placed in the entrance door of the Horst Building.
The structure of Newton is located on the triangle space in one part of the
revolving door; The apple tree is in the other part. This installation will
function by the centrifugal force when the door turns. People will need
to pass Newton's law before they enter the Department of Machanical
Engineering.
Material:
Acrylic Sculpture-
The structure of Newton's image is made by transparent acrylic in a 3D
form. The form of the apple tree is made by transparent acrylic tube. The
apple is made from coloured acrylic.
Wheelwork:
In order to lift the apple to Newton's hand and mouth, a wheelwork is
working inside Newton's sculpture. The structure is transparent allowing
every mechanical part to be visible.
