Yota Ioannidou - A Monument for Newton

A game as a monument

Most monuments are dedicated to persons of the past that played an important role in politics, science, arts etc. The selection of who is going to be represented in a public monument is always connected with the dominant culture and how history is constructed or reconstructed.
A monument stands there to remind us of a person or a fact and it's importance. In many cases, we know little about this person or we are only aware of his/her great “contribution”.
Newton’s life inspired me to think of how to include in a monument the wider historical period (scientific, social, political, everyone that played a role). In order to create a monument for a historical person, it is necessary to research and comprehend the historical background and find a way to reveal it.
Through a game, we can shape and develop specific knowledge. It is a way to commemorate facts and preserve them in our mind.
Creating a game of knowledge is in a way a re-writing of history. Ideas and information are disseminated, the game is distributed in multiples and the audience takes the role of a player (who can play repeatedly).
A monument is not necessary static or unique, even a ceremony or a demonstration that takes place every year is a kind of monument. According to the above, a knowledge-game is possible to function as a monument basically because it is a reminder. (Monument's etymology: Middle English, from Latin monumentum, memorial, from mon re, to remind)
In “Monument for Newton”, a chance is given to create a full field of information that represent almost a century (1643-1727, Newton's life). This can be achieved through the collaboration of teams that are going to base their work in historical research. The player/spectator is entering into a specific period through the formulated questionsanswers of the game. He/she gets the chance to construct the image of a wider historical time and Isaac Newton based on an exploratory and playful way.
