Luisa Moreira Monteiro: School in Midyat

Walking in the streets of Midyat and making photographs of people who are passing by, guided me to a primary school where a teacher welcomes me to step in.
The teacher introduced the director who invited me for the usual tea and gave me access to see the class rooms.
Since I was in Turkey my main interest was to see and understand the woman in society and at the same time to collect images.
When I enter the classroom all this children started to ask me in English my name and I asked all the girls to write their name in my note book.

I also asked the teacher to enquire them about what they want to be when they grow up. Most of them wanted to be a teacher others wanted to be nurses, one architect and one doctor…
All these girls were very friendlily and when we’ve got together in the playground they tried to make a conversation with me but their English was not so good… they still are in primary school!

The school was old and the teachers very young because they have to go to where the alders don’t want to go. The students can not go everyday to school because there are no space for everybody; if they go on Monday they can not go on Tuesday.
The director told me that next year they will have computers for the children to learn but space problem is more difficult to solve.
