Sun May 8: Mor Yakup-Midyat-Hasankeyf

Old bridge over the Tigris; on the other side in and on the maountains the old castle and city

Although we visited Hasankeyf on our way from Diyarbakır to Mardin, some of wanted a new and longer visit. So there we went again with Said. We had to be back at 15.00 for Juhee’s tea party.

Hasankeyf on a Sunday is different than on a Thursday. There were a lot of Turkish tourist, and also a lot of people brought their own food and barbeque!
We climbed the mountain to the castle, saw the (structure of the) old village and enjoyed the Tigris.
We left for the monastery to pick up some people for lunch and then headed back to the tea party.
Not only we were invited but also people (especially children) from the village were invited. But they didn’t show up!!! So Bruno went down to hunt for them. Juhee offered us tea and cookies and Bouchaib performed some magic tricks.
And then from one of the mobile phones came a Kurdish song. The men wanted to dance and they did. Very strange to see people dancing to the sound coming out a mobile phone, even stranger was, that others were recording this performance on their mobile phone!!
But it was of course to much noise for a monastery, so one of the nuns ask to stop and we (they) did.
Read more about Juhee’s tea party.

In the evening Paul and Ajla, with the help of other students, install their object (a satellite from pans and pots and lighted up with butagaz lamps) in the caves around the monastery to make pictures in the twilight.
When Alite came back from the ritual dinner in Midyat, she was asked to talk to the priest. Apparently the army called the monastery because they noticed some strange activities on the property of the monastery. It showed again how naive we were that we were surprised to know that the army was watching (us) all the time.
The priest was really worried and we all got the feeling that in a way they were happy that we left so things could go back to the normal routine.
