Dutch Art Institute
Sarah Erzfinke: Scarfs

Many women in Turkey wear kerchiefs for religious reasons.
In the group from the Dutch Art Institute that went to Turkey were female artists from South Korea, Portugal, Norway, Belgium, Peru, the Netherlands and Germany.
Most of them took scarfs or hats with them and put it on the head when visiting churches or mosques, to pay respect to the tradition of the country.
It is very interesting to look at the choice of the scarfs, which the women made.
I photographed every women of our group with their own scarfs. I took portraits of six women. I try to show the difference of everyone in covering the heads.
The scarfs get a different context, it is no longer a traditional-religious one.
They become strong icons, coming directly from a movie-scene.
